Top Fashion Designers choose Scottish Jewellery

Scottish fashion designers are having something of a moment. Jonathan Saunders, he of block colour dresses and graphic prints, won Designer of the Year at the fifth Scottish Fashion Awards last month. Holly Fulton won Young Designer of the Year at the same awards; although you’ll better recognise her name from Sex And The City 2, in which four of her dresses appeared. Scottish jewellery is also increasingly in the limelight, with designers such as Linda Macdonald – who won last year’s Editor’s Choice at the International Jewellery Fair – in high demand.

The good news is that Scottish jewellery isn’t just about tartan, as fabulous as it is. There are some lovely tartan pieces to be had, from corsages to evening bags and wraps. They are bold statement pieces that catch the onlooker’s eye; they cry out to be noticed – the perfect complement for that little black dress. But those less bold can take heart. The rugged landscape of Scotland, the heathers, meadows, lochs and bracken exerts a constant pull on Scottish designers, resulting in a proliferation of amethysts, emeralds, sapphires and topaz in their works.

These beautifully coloured stones grace all manner of Scottish jewellery, from the conventional bracelets and earrings to the more unusual pins and brooches. Matching sets give a look a certain chic sleekness, whilst contrasting a silver and emerald bracelet with a topaz ring shows an awareness of colour combination and an individual style. These colours stand out from the masses of gold (both fake and real) that has graced the arms, necks and fingers of women this summer; the stones and tartans are different, unique and set the wearer apart from the crowd.
